This year’s 2021 Grammys was set to air on Jan. 31, but due to the sudden increase of COVID-19 cases in California earlier this year, it was postponed to March 14.
The historic music event was set to be hosted without a live audience, according to Rolling Stone. In compliance with COVID-19 protocols, only the performing artists, their team, presenters and a small number of media members were in attendance.
The event contained five stages of the same shape and size, four of which were set aside for performances and one for the presenters. Stages were organized in a circle, facing one another, while crew members worked from the middle of the set. The event was hosted at the Los Angeles Convention Center, a contrast from their usual Staples Center venue.
Many nominees performed at both the premiere ceremony and the actual award show. The premiere ceremony was hosted by songstress Jhené Aiko, and stars such as Burna Boy and Igor Levit performed. The Daily Show host and comedian, Trevor Noah, hosted the award show.
