Some college campuses are known for having populations of feral animals, especially squirrels running and playing around. Others might have feral cats, raccoons, or even ducks.
At the Sam Houston State University campus grounds, you probably came across some of the Bearkat Chickens roaming around. The sounds of clucking and cock-a-doodle-doos add to the sounds of nature around the campus.
These chickens reside on the Sam Houston Memorial Museum grounds and they have since multiplied in numbers. In fact, I have seen some chicks when I came to the museum park to relax in nature.
In addition to the chickens, there are also squirrels, Muscovy ducks, a couple of white domestic geese and some turtles enjoy swimming in the museum lake.
Inspired by the presence of the Bearkat Chickens on campus, students wrote a fictional story titled "The Story of the Sam Houston Chickens." These students were members of the Priority One public relations class back in spring of 2017.
According to Casey Roon, curator of exhibits for the Sam Houston Memorial Museum, this is a book about "how the chickens crossed the road to the campus which we hope readers of all ages will enjoy."
The book was published in 2018 and published by Bright Sky Press. Illustrations of the book were created by Victoria Gillis.
You can purchase "The Story of the Sam Houston Chickens" at the Sam Houston Memorial Museum, especially at the Wigwam Neosho museum store.
Also, if you have a chance, don't forget to say hello to the Bearkat Chickens when they visit the SHSU campus!
