The best way to clean your makeup brushes

Updated: Jun 27, 2023

As a professional makeup artist, cleanliness and sanitation are super important, especially when it comes to your makeup brushes. If not cleaned properly, germs can accumulate in the brushes, resulting in infections.

Cleaning your makeup brushes regularly helps them last longer and washes away any makeup, dirt and germs on the bristles.

Luckily, washing your brushes is easy to do. All you need is lukewarm water and a gentle soap. My favorite thing to use is baby shampoo because not only does it clean my brushes but leaves behind a subtle, clean scent. I have also used the Dove soap bar, which is also gentle enough for makeup brushes. Regular shampoo contains ingredients that are too harsh for makeup brush bristles, resulting in breakage and loss of bristles. You can also use a soap that is specially formulated for makeup brushes. For example, here is the Crazy Merman brush soap and the Bdellium Tools brush cleanser, which comes with a silicone cleaning pad. Both options have a variety of scent options to choose from.

A silicone brush cleaning mat makes the job easier if you have one. In this case, my mat has different textures depending on the type of brush I am washing and the suction cups stick easily to my bathroom sink.

The first step is to slightly wet the brush with some lukewarm water. Then, I apply a small amount of baby shampoo on my brush cleaning mat. Usually, I swirl my makeup brushes into a soapy lather. Once all of the makeup and dirt are washed away, I rinse the brushes and squeeze out the excess water. Finally, I lay my brushes flat to dry. Usually they are dry within 24 hours, but some brushes need more time to dry depending on the size of the brush.

However, if you do not have time to wash your makeup brushes or you have to do makeup on multiple clients in a day, you can use a special brush cleaner that helps wipe away makeup and germs without any water or rinsing. For example, you can use the best-selling Cinema Secrets brush cleaner.

When done properly and with great care, your makeup brushes will be good as new and will last for a long time. Plus, it keeps your brushes fluffy and soft.
