Here are some journalism movies worth watching

There are a lot of movies that feature journalism and values that matter to journalists. And a lot more than you think.


In fact, most of these movies are very worthy to watch because they provide insight into the journalistic experience while providing a source of entertainment. Journalism schools across the country typically include journalism movies into its curricula to provide a learning experience for aspiring journalists.


Here is a list of five journalism movies (out of many) that are absolutely worthy to watch.


All the President's Men (1976), 2 hours 18 minutes

"All the President's Men," released in 1976, is based on a true story. Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein, two reporters from The Washington Post, worked together to uncover evidence of the Watergate scandal that ultimately caused President Richard Nixon's downfall and resignation. Dustin Hoffman and Robert Redford portrayed Bernstein and Woodward, respectively. This movie has a PG rating.

Citizen Kane (1941), 1 hour 59 minutes

"Citizen Kane," released in 1941, is loosely based on the biography of William Randolph Hearst. This film chronicles the life of a newspaper publishing tycoon, Charles Foster Kane, and the effort by reporters to investigate the origin of his final word, "rosebud." Orson Welles portrayed Kane, while Joseph Cotten portrayed Kane's best friend and reporter Jedediah Leland. This film has a PG rating.

The China Syndrome (1979), 2 hours 2 minutes

"The China Syndrome," released in 1979, is about a TV reporter who, along with her cameraman, discovers a possible cover-up of safety hazards at a nuclear power plant. Jane Fonda portrayed Kimberley Wells, the reporter investigating the possible cover-up. Michael Douglas portrayed her cameraman, Richard Adams. This film has a PG rating.

Good Night, and Good Luck (2005), 1 hour 33 minutes

"Good Night, and Good Luck," released in 2005, broadcast journalist Edward R. Murrow and his producer Fred W. Friendly looked to expose Senator Joseph McCarthy for the fear monger he was. David Strathairn and George Clooney portrayed Murrow and Friendly, respectively. This movie has a PG rating.

Outfoxed: Rupert Murdoch's War on Journalism (2004), 1 hour 18 minutes

"Outfoxed: Rupert Murdoch's War on Journalism," released in 2004, is a documentary film examining Fox News Channel's claim to be "fair and balanced." The documentary consists of interviews with former FNC employees. Walter Cronkite and Roger Ailes were among those who participated in this documentary. This movie does not have a rating.
