If you happen to visit New York City, you might want to check out Eileen's Special Cheesecake, or Eileen's for short.
Eileen Avezzano founded the bakery in 1975 after testing her signature family recipe for cheesecake outside of her apartment. Her cheesecakes became so popular that she expanded her business into a bakery in SoHo.
Typically, a traditional New York-style cheesecake would be described as really dense, rich and thick.
Avezzano, however, sets her recipe apart by the quality of ingredients. In addition, the lightweight, creamy texture with the perfect balance of sweet and tangy are what make Eileen's cheesecakes truly unique in a way.
According to a video from Food Insider, Eileen's separates the egg yolks by hand, which go into the sugar and cream cheese mixture. The egg whites get whipped into fluffy peaks in a separate mixer. The graham cracker crust is hand-pressed, giving the cheesecake a unique look each time while retaining its great Eileen's taste.
In 2019, Food and Wine rated Eileen's Special Cheesecake as the best cheesecake in America.
Avezzano's two daughters, Holly Maloney and Bonnie Ponte, grew up together during the early years of the business. Eventually, it became a part of who they are today and started running the bakery with their mother.
Maloney and Ponte have continued their mother's legacy of this woman-run family business.
Eileen's Special Cheesecake is a cult favorite among New Yorkers and visitors from all over the world. There is even a long, constant line out the door of eager cheesecake lovers waiting to savor the delicious dessert.
"It's all about family and tradition," Maloney said.
If you want to stop by Eileen's, the address is 17 Cleveland Pl, New York, New York 10012, United States. You can also call the bakery at 212-966-5585.
